Bat Pattern — The Most Precise Harmonic
If the Gartley is the classic of the harmonic family, the Bat is its surgeon. Scott Carney described the pattern in 2001 — one of the constructions he used to expand the canon started by H.M. Gartley — and built it around a single level: the 88.6% retracement of XA. The number looks exotic, but it has a mathematical pedigree (the square root of 0.786, i.e., the fourth root of 0.618) and one practical consequence traders love this setup for: the entry point D sits RIGHT BEFORE the invalidation point X.
That's exactly where the "most precise harmonic" reputation comes from. Not from magic — from geometry. Since D falls at 88.6% of the impulse and the stop goes behind X (100%), the risk is only a small fraction of the length of wave XA. The line between a live and a dead setup is razor-sharp, and the risk-reward ratio comes out better than the Gartley's by definition, at the same targets. Pattern Structure
The Bat is a retracement-type XABCD structure: bullish draws a stretched-out letter "M" (D low — you buy), bearish an inverted "W" (D high — you sell). The shape resembles the Gartley; the differences are in the proportions.

Remember the Bat's signature: shallow B, deep D. The market makes a listless correction (B barely reaching 38.2–50% of XA), seemingly returns to the trend, and then wave CD surprises with its depth and rides almost all the way back to the start of the impulse. This asymmetry sets the Bat apart from the Gartley (B = 61.8%, D = 78.6%) and is internally logical: since B is shallow and D deep, wave CD has to be markedly longer than AB — which is why the BC extension goes as far as 261.8% here, and the AB=CD setup appears in an extended variant (CD ≈ 127.2% of AB), not a 1:1 equality.
There's also an "alternate Bat" variant with D at 113% XA — meaning a small poke past point X — but that's formally a different setup with a different stop. In the classic Bat, a break of X ends the discussion.

How to Measure Point D
The Bat's PRZ zone is built from three measurements taken once waves XA, AB and BC are complete:
- 88.6% retracement of XA — the primary measurement and the pattern's calling card. A Fibonacci grid from X to A; if your platform doesn't have the 88.6% level, add it manually — without it you can't measure a Bat.
- 161.8–261.8% extension of BC — a wide range, so treat it as a confirming measurement, not a standalone one.
- Extended AB=CD — a 127.2% projection of the length of AB, measured from C. When it lands near 88.6% of XA, the confluence is complete.
The practical order is the opposite of what intuition suggests: check B first. If B retraced more than 50% of XA, stop calculating — this isn't a Bat, at most a Gartley candidate. Only a clean B opens up the measurement of D. And a second note: 88.6% is a level, but D is a ZONE around it. The market regularly stops a few ticks short, or pokes through the level with a wick — which is why the zone is defined by overlapping measurements, not a single line. Measure consistently by wicks; switching methods between setups is just fooling yourself with a ruler.
How to Trade It
Entry. In the D zone you wait for a reaction: a rejection candle, a reversal formation on a lower timeframe, a loss of momentum in CD. With such a tight stop, it's tempting to enter with a blind limit order — and some Bat traders in fact do that, accepting that the stop will sometimes get hit right away. The confirmation-based approach gets a worse entry price but higher selectivity; pick one method and stick with it long enough to actually measure it.
Stop loss. Just behind point X, with a small buffer. This is the Bat's strongest card: the distance from D to X is only 11.4% of the length of wave XA, so for the same amount of risk per trade you can size a bigger position than in any other retracement-type harmonic. A break of X = the correction retraced the whole impulse = the setup is dead. No debate, no "maybe it comes back."
Targets. First: 38.2–50% retracement of wave CD. Second: the area around point C. Third: the area around A. The arithmetic does the work here: entering at 88.6% XA with a stop behind X, even a modest first target usually gives an R:R around 1:2, and reaching C can exceed 1:3–1:4 depending on the geometry of the setup. Execution template: part of the position at the first target, stop to breakeven, the rest at C/A. Remember you're catching a knife after a deep CD wave — risk control matters more than maximizing your hit rate.
A numerical example, for the memory. A bullish Bat: an XA impulse from 100 to 110. B at 45% retracement, roughly 105.5 — inside the 38.2–50% range. After the BC bounce, wave CD slides down to D = 88.6% XA, roughly 101.1. Stop below X = 100 with a buffer: risk of about 1.4 units. First target at 50% retracement of CD (roughly 103.5 — a gain of 2.4, R:R about 1:1.7), second at C (roughly 106–107 — R:R above 1:3.5). The same structure traded "the Gartley way," entering at 102.1, would have a stop nearly twice as wide — that's the Bat's whole edge, in numbers.
Context filter. The best Bats are deep corrections inside a LIVE higher-timeframe trend, where 88.6% XA overlaps with old resistance/support, a demand zone or a liquidity sweep. A Bat drawn against a weekly trend isn't an opportunity — it's a stop-loss statistic.
Common Mistakes
Ignoring point B. The most common classification error: B at 61.8% XA and calling it a "Bat" when it's actually a Gartley. The entry then falls 10 percentage points too deep or too shallow, and the whole edge of a tight stop disappears. B shallower than 50% — only then keep calculating.
A stop right on X. X is a level everyone is watching — including the people hunting stops. A buffer behind X (roughly the width of the instrument's noise, e.g., a fraction of the ATR) costs a sliver of position size and saves you from the classic wick-and-run.
Trading Bats on M1–M5. On low timeframes, spread and slippage eat up the entire edge of the tight stop, and noise produces dozens of pseudo-setups. A sensible minimum is M15–H1; the cleanest Bats show up on H4 and D1.
Trading every Bat a scanner flags. Automated scanners flag "just barely" tolerance-fitting setups, with no trend or confluence context. A scanner is a candidate generator, not a signal generator.
Believing in the "most reliable harmonic pattern." Time for honesty: the opinion about the Bat's exceptional effectiveness is EXACTLY that — an opinion. There's no large, independent research at the Bulkowski standard for harmonics — the "Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns" doesn't catalog them, and private backtests have small samples and unverifiable swing-recognition methodology. Add the subjectivity of drawing on top of that: a different choice of point X and the "same" pattern disappears from the chart. The Bat has a real, geometric advantage — the tightest invalidation in the family — but whether that translates into an edge ON YOUR MARKET is something you have to measure yourself, in a journal with written rules.
